Sander Baan

Sander Baan (1984) is a saxophonist/composer working in the field of jazz and improvised music. He is the founder of the Sander Baan Quartet, with which he reached the finals of the Leidse Jazz Award and Dordtse Jazzprijs in 2013. 2014 marked the release of their debut: Country Music. The album was received very well by the press, praising his lyrical playing, deep sound and modern concept. After release the band toured the Netherlands as well as Belgium, Germany and Romania. Right now the group is working on the release of the follow-up: Heartscape. The album is scheduled for release in fall 2017.

Besides working in small groups he has a lot of experience with playing in bigbands, among which the Stageband, the Noordpool Orchestra and the Northern European Jazz Orchestra. In these orchestras he has collaborated with Yuri Honing, Fay Claassen, Alex Sipiagin, Izaline Calister, Steve Waterman, Janne Schra, Ben van Gelder and Robin Eubanks. With the Stageband he won the international bigband competition of Hoofddorp multiple times.  

As a saxophonist Sander likes to take the instrument to places where you least expect it. He has worked with theatre groups, improvising live soundtracks. Besides that he is collaborating with visual artist Kitty Boon. Sander composed the music for her works 'Forgive Me' and 'Control'.
